Cake Galaxy Zim

1. May you kindly share your name & how you came up with your name: Cake Galaxy Zim is our trade name.

Initially when I started baking,I used Mai Tee’s cakes (Tee because all my kids’ names start with a T) and later on I decided to rebrand from Mai Tee’s cakes. I thought it would not be ideal to be an International brand with such a name which is the ultimate vision. Instead, Mai Tee’s cakes would only limit me to being a Zimbabwean brand.

How the name Cake Galaxy Zim came about is just funny. I loved Mai Judah’s 9am-12pm show on Star FM, which was called The Breeze by then.

When she resigned the name of the show was changed from The breeze to Morning Galaxy and by that time I was looking for a perfect name, and I just said to my self why not call my business Cake Galaxy?!

3. Where do you operate from?: We are located at House number 11187, Glenorah A Extension, Harare, Zimbabwe

4. What propelled you to start your business?:
From time immemorable, I have always loved cooking, baking, designing, and decorating.

By the way, I am a holder of a Bachelor of science degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management and I remember asking my husband who was my fiance by then if I could do “Dual studying” whereby I study my degree and a baking course at the same time but he advised me not to do that because of the unhealthy stress and unnecessary pressure associated with “Dual studying”. Because of his advice, I suspended my baking course for a while whilst finishing off my studies.

I then Graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in 2015, and became fully employed at a local hotel, working in the Front Office department. I initially worked as a Night auditor and then I was later promoted to be the HOD of Rooms division “Front Office and House keeping department.”

During that time, I was just a past-time baker, baking for family and friends. My kitchen was my favourite place in our house.

My dream then came true in August 2020 during the Covid 19 pandemic when one of our relatives asked me to bake a birthday cake for his daughter.

You guessed right, my answer was a big No because I was not a professional baker by then. He insisted, “Maiguru ko makeke amunotipa aya tauya kumba kwenyu” in his voice, meaning “How about the cakes you always serve us when we pay you a visit”, he was refering to those one minute microwave mug cakes that I normally serve when ever I get a visitor. That was my only run to option because they don’t take much time to prepare and it was my norm that no one should leave my place without having a bite of my sweet treats.

I tried to look for professional bakers around my area but they couldn’t deliver because of the lockdown traveling restrictions. In the end, I had no option but to just bake the cake for them. They loved the cake, I received more orders from that one cake and the rest is history.

That’s how Cake Galaxy Zim was born. I then resigned from my full time job as a Hotel Manager in February 2022, and I don’t regret that decision

8. Any advice for couples planning their special days?: Couples should make sure that they sign a detailed contract with all of their service providers. A contract will safe guard them because not all service providers are honest enough to deliver what they promised.

Above all else, pray and plan everything together.
